The first ever winner of the Championship Boerewors competition – Tommy Hendriks (74) from Brackenfell in Cape Town, Western Cape – has entered a new recipe for the competition’s 30th anniversary.

Nostalgia prompts Hendriks, a retired Shoprite Meat Market Manager, to enter the competition every year.

“I feel like this year’s recipe is the one that will help me win the title again. In 1992, when I first entered the Championship Boerewors competition, it was only open to Shoprite and Checkers employees. From 2001 the competition was opened to members of the public. Over the years I’ve really enjoyed seeing how my recipes have fared against those of both amateur and professional boerewors makers.”

He encourages anyone with a boerewors recipe to enter the competition for SA’s number one boerewors, hosted annually by Shoprite and Checkers. “I’m hoping to convince my brother-in-law to enter the competition with me this year. It is a wonderful experience and I’m already contemplating entering again next year.”

The annual Championship Boerewors competition, launched by Shoprite and Checkers in 1992, continues to unearth to South Africa’s finest boerewors recipes. Entries for the 30th annual Championship Boerewors competition are open until 17 June 2022. For more information or to enter, visit
