Its seems unbelievable to think that we’ve hit the half term mark for 2024, and what a busy and inspiring first half it has been for the food, beverage and packaging industry!

I am writing this after attending the Food Safety Summit hosted in Johannesburg where leaders and professionals in the field highlighted that food safety doesn’t have boundaries – every link from feed, seed, farm to fork matters. I took away some key insights from the event, most notably that trust and collaboration are crucial elements in this chain, making it possible to overcome and adapt to the unexpected with the goal of keeping products safe for consumers.

In addition, the event highlighted the importance of organisational culture and leadership as key links in the food safety chain. Effective leadership breeds high employee morale as everyone in the chain is aligned and believes in what they are doing.

Change can happen in a heartbeat, and collaboration and communication lie at the centre in overcoming the challenges that the unexpected may bring! With the election still fresh in our minds, we are voting for industry to stand together for food safety, and as we celebrate World Food Safety Day on 7 June, industry is reminded of the importance of being prepared for food safety incidents with the theme “Food Safety: Prepare for the Unexpected.”
