Read your March 2024 Food & Beverage Reporter Magazine

In the March edition of Food & Beverage Reporter we celebrate the expansion of one of South Africa’s best loved brands.

Eskort, was founded in 1917 and has been a steadfast figure in the pork processing industry. Wendy Breakey, our sales and account manager, was invited to attend the launch of the the expanded facility and in our feature we unpack information on key suppliers, including PHT, Matrix and Wayne who brought their vision, energy, expertise and highly innovative technology, products and systems to the site. Don’t miss the Eskort Heidelberg  video where you can see the facility in full!

We also spoke to Janusz Luterek of Hahn & Hahn on the latest ramifications of the aflatoxin  story and its broader ramifications for the food industry.

Since the story hit the headlines, countless products containing peanuts have been recalled from retail shelves with subsequent economic and reputational fallout. Janusz looks at HACCP requirements on industrial scale peanut butter manufacturers in South Africa, and discusses how the degree of non-compliance and percentage of products exceeding the legal aflatoxin limits. A fascinating read – don’t miss it!

We also bring you the latest information of soya on the baking industry. To meet the rising demand for soy products, various soya product-producing companies have been established in South Africa including Impilo, established in 2004 and recently acquired by Synercore Food Holdings. This is one of South Africa’s leading soya ingredient manufacturers, specialising primarily in the supply of soya flour to cereal manufacturers and bakeries.

Another hot topic in this edition is a thought provoking opinion piece by respected recycler, Chandru Wadhani, of Extrupet. His view is that compostable and biodegradable packaging, currently mooted as the ‘silver bullets’ that will end South Africa’s plastic packaging pollution and landfill challenges, may not deserve the ‘green’ image they have been credited with worldwide and locally.

The South African food industry is a leading force on the African continent and we are proud to play our part in driving its message forward.
